Sunny summer skies made way for the annual Good Times car show on Sunday June 23, 2002 in Los Angeles, California. Marking its 17th year, the Good Times show went off in the city streets of the Highland Park district of which is situated in the North East Los Angeles area. With the streets closed off for blocks upon blocks, a festive setting resulted with row upon row of street and show vehicles.

The Good Times car show was produced by Good Times car club and D.F.A.A.. One of the show producers lives locally thus giving the show a bit of a homecoming feel. With the approval of the city, assistance by parking enforcement and local police department on hand the stage is set for this show to be held year in and year out. Traditionally this show is free to the public and this year was no different. The only difference observed is the quantity of attendance that was markedly improved over last year.

The show today is a smorgasbord of vehicles including lowriders, imports, Suvs, trucks, mini vans, bikes, and classics. Just as the spectrum of vehicles made a showing so did the turn out of car clubs that include the likes of Unfadeable Styles, Outstanding, Heaven, High Image, Stylistics, Style, Elite, Perspective, Techniques, One Bad Creation, Imperials, Temptation, E-legal Imports, and Swift. Prestigiously enough, the lowrider of the year, a 1979 Chevy Monte Carlo belonging to Outstanding car club, also made an exhibition at the show. The hopping contest, sponsored by OG Hopper, was held in one of the street intersections where the stage was set up at and went off much to the delight of the onlookers. It is perhaps the only time one can hop their car directly in front of police on city streets without warranting a citation. The hopping competition meant crowd cheers and cash prizes for a few, and busted hoses and broken hopes for a few others. Thanks to Pastor Marco who was the master of ceremony, all participants left to the applause of an appreciative crowd.

As the summer heat beat down on the streets and brows of attendants, many could appreciate the affordable prices of vendors on hand. Bottled water was going for seventy-five cents, freshly shaved ice cones cooled the hot heat, and appetite-quenching meals at a value were being served. For music lovers, CD compilations were going for five dollars, and for those looking to clothe themselves or to simply wear less, clothing such as jerseys, sweaters and tank tops were also on sale. The Set Free Ministries stage played host to local talent such as the Set Free All Stars, and an act with Dj Oso Big, as well as a few B-boys. Other vendors indirectly making a presence were Street Designs with their custom Astro van as was Uneek with their Durango.

The uniqueness of this show is due in part to the sundry of support of attendants. As previously mentioned, city groups, teens, families, kids, car owners, vendors, media, and local shop owners are all to be recognized for this year’s success of the Good Times car show. Keep an eye out for this show again next June. Stay tuned to pozest.com.

See ya next time.
