Once a year the hallowed month creeps up on us. Once a year the ghouls and ghosts gleefully run rampant in the realm of our nation. Once a year Monster Massive possesses the Los Angeles Sports Arena and 2002 was no different as on Saturday, October 26, 2002, once again Go Ventures filled the catacombs of the venue with dancing demons, flashy fiends, barbaric beasts, gorgeous goils, gallant goblins, chilling costumes, magnificent macabre make up, and an all around positive vibe.

It is no secret that in 2002 Southern California, up until Monster Massive, saw no massive electronica music festivals. The strange spiral that had taken the southland's massive scene off the map was run aground as Monster Massive came out of the twists and turn full steam ahead. Not needing to twist the arms of electronica enthusiasts or of those needing to blow off steam, with an eager and upbeat anticipation, the masses that yearned for a massive all year turned out in full force. This army of partygoers arrived longing to lingo and with a zealous display of creative genius. The grace of the dancers complimented the course of the tables just as the artistic club kids' outfits complimented the all around feeling of community. People from local Los Angeles, semi-distant san diego, the Bay Area, the Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley and other places far and close all took part in making this a night of joy and smiles while also placing a grimace on the grim reaper himself.

Reaping from this aura of positivity was the event as a whole with its five themed areas of music. The main arena floor was titled the Tomb of Doom with the tomb toppling skills of Judge Jules, Anne Savage, Richard Humpty Vission, Matt Hardwick, Dj Irene, Dj Reza and the Swedish Egil all pounding on the door of purgatory. Next door was the House of Horrors with the hell raising likes of Felix Da Housecat, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, the East Coast Boogiemen, Mark Grant, Dj Heather, Lenny V, and Dj Rene. Further down the dark forest we find the Witches Woods area that blared the beats of Medusa & Feline Science, SS & MC Skibadee, AK1200, Freaky Flow & MC Flipside, CRS?, Deacon, APX-1, SDF-1, and Phoenix Orion giving the trees their underworld deformation. Beginning a descension downwards, we find ourselves in the Phantom Chamber where ghostly gavels of judgment went off at the hands of Spacemen, Dj Funk, Barry Weaver, Mars, Thomas Michael, Thee-O, Paul Nasani, Signal, Josh David, Greg G, and Byron. Further into the ground when one thinks they can't descend any lower than doom, we find the Devil's Dungeon blitzing with the brazen bass of high beats per minute initially giving off inviting happiness by Paulina Taylor, Simon Apex, Robbie Long, Dutchboy, LostBoy, Notorius and Galvatron. Then upon passing the inviting entrance of the dungeon, the tables are turned like the devil did to Faust by the hardcore sound of Dr. Zvago, Dj Dione, Double D, Eric L, Demigod, Inyoung and Diehard with a plausible end result of the everlasting fire's hellion himself being dethroned.

The seemingly endless fierce sounds of talent calmed the chilly air and sped time it seems as the event was over at 4 a.m. in what seemed like a single breath of time from when the gates first opened. With multiple entrances, and each entrance having several lines, the long lines of the past were but a forgotten tale as entry into event was swift and secure. Even with all the extra gear of some costumes event staff did a thorough job admitting attendants with little or no discomfort. Attendants could take comfort in knowing that on hand were refreshments, concession stands, vendors, and plenty of restrooms available to meet their needs. Also mindful of attendance was plenty of security and local police to ensure and preserve the peace and it can be dutifully said that no negative incidents were observed. For those attending the event, a piece of history was taken with them as a massive was long overdue in 2002 for Southern Californians. With the end of 2002 fast approaching, we can look forward to the final massive of the year and to a new era. Don’t forget to visit WWW.MONSTERMASSIVE.COM
